The Sharp Seven at Simms Summer Concerts
Enjoy vibrant live jazz by the Courtenay River this summer
The City of Courtenay’s Simms Summer Concerts continue Sunday, July 19, with The Sharp Seven performing at Simms Millennium Park at 7 p.m.
The Sharp Seven was born from a shared love of jazz and a simple dream. With the encouragement of Vancouver Island University Big Band Director Greg Bush, the original group came together after vocalist Ralph Barrat expressed his wish to sing with a big band. That vision became Ralph Barrat & The Sharp Seven—affectionately known as #7—and laid the foundation for the band that continues today.
While the lineup has evolved over the years, The Sharp Seven remains dedicated to presenting vibrant, accessible jazz performed by some of Vancouver Island's finest musicians.
Today's Sharp Seven features Mel McCutcheon on vocals, Paul Nuez on trombone, Grahame Edwards on bass, Michelle Draper on piano, Jack Reynolds on saxophone and flute, Beau Stocker on drums, and Dave Lymburner on trumpet. Together, they bring decades of experience spanning jazz, classical, theatre, education, and live performance, creating an ensemble that is both polished and refreshingly relaxed.
In recent seasons, The Sharp Seven has been delighted to perform for enthusiastic audiences throughout the Comox Valley and Campbell River. Whether presenting timeless jazz standards, swinging favourites, Latin grooves, or imaginative new arrangements, the band is committed to sharing the warmth, energy, and spontaneity that make live jazz such a rewarding experience.
